[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Dr. Simeons, is a noted endocrinologist developed a system that was set to change our understanding of weight problems forever. Dr Simeons wrote “Pounds & Inches, a New Approach to Obesity“, an explanation of how he understands weight issues, dispels myths about weight loss and explains why many weight loss programs do not yield the desired result.
Dr Simeons lived and worked in India for 20 years. During that time he’d noted many impoverished women birthed healthy full-term infants despite: living on 200 calories a day and losing weight throughout their entire pregnancy. After much research he concluded pregnant women have a physiological mechanism that converts available fat stores into nutrition for the baby. His revolutionary work in the area of weight loss began with that observation and conclusion.
Dr Simeons identifies we have 3 different types of fat:
- Structural fat fills the gaps between our organs, like packing material. Structural fat is very important because it does things like:
- beds and protects vital organs like the kidneys in soft elastic tissue
- protects the coronary arteries and
- keeps the skin smooth and taut.
- Normal fat is the ‘normal‘ reserve of fuel we all know about. This is the fat store the body draws on when the body’s demand for fuel is greater than the current nutritional supply. Our normal fat reserves are stored all over the body.
- Abnormal fat is the third type of fat and the most important one for people who are chronically overweight. Dr Simeon was very clear: It is the accumulation of such fat [i.e. abnormal fat], and of such fat only, from which the overweight patient suffers. While ever abnormal fat is a potential fuel source it is different to normal reserves because it is not available to the body in a nutritional emergency. It’s as if abnormal fat is locked in a ‘fixed deposit account‘ rather than your ‘daily transaction account‘ like the normal fate reserves.
When a person who is obese tries to lose weight by starving themselves, s/he first lose their normal fat reserves. After using up normal fat stores the body then starts burning structural fat. Note: the body ONLY uses abnormal fat reserves as a last resort. Sadly, by the time these fat stores are being accessed the person feels so weak and hungry that their ‘quest for self improvement‘ is abandoned. This is why, when many people go on weight loss programs they complain that they lose the wrong fat; they ARE. What’s worse is they feel famished, tired, their face becomes drawn and haggard… And we have all seen (or worse even, experienced?) this; their belly, hips, thighs and upper arms often show little improvement; worse still they feel like a complete failure when yet ‘another weight loss program hasn’t worked‘.
It was for this reason Dr. Simeons said:[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]What a revelation…
I mean, we’ve ALL seen this right? People who, regardless of what they eat, remain slender. Oh sure they might go up and down within a specific weight range but by and large their body mass is stable REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY EAT. How many times have you wondered how…why? Why them and not me? What am I doing wrong? Is it my genes? But then you are remember you have family members who are healthy and so you lament again: How come I was the unlucky one? Or worse still, if you accept the myths about weight loss: WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? Other people diet and achieve the health and body they want; what is wrong with me??? Dr Simeons described the judgements levelled at the overweight and the low calorie diet industry as an[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][dt_sc_pullquote type=”pullquote1″ align=”center” icon=”yes” cite=”Dr Simeons”]Injustice to the obese[/dt_sc_pullquote]
